Call Numbers: Getting Started

Introduction

The Law Library uses the Library of Congress Classification System or LC Call Numbers for short. Each book in the library is given a call number to help identify that unique book. No two call numbers are exactly the same, and call numbers can assist you in locating materials.

LC call numbers arrange books on the same subject together. This makes for easier browsing. So if you know the call number of a book, you may find that book sitting on the shelf with several other books discussing the same topic.
