Introduction

Land use planning law involves governmental entities using police power to regulate and control the use and development of property, often to protect natural resources or the population or to reduce conflicts between adjacent landowners.  Zoning is one type of land use planning in which a local government designates areas for permitted uses, such as single-family housing or industrial zones.  Eminent domain is one tool governmental entities may use to further their land use planning goals, in that the government may seize property or property rights, with due monetary compensation, for government use.

This guide is intended to assist researchers in locating primary and secondary materials relating to land use planning, zoning and eminent domain in the University of Iowa Law Library’s collections.
