Health Law: Medicare

Medicare Laws

U.S. Medicare laws consist of four parts of Title XVIII of the Social Security Act.
  • Part A - for people 65 and older who need hospital care, skilled-nursing facility care, home healthcare and hospice
  • Part B - for people who need physician services, outpatient hospital care, ambulatory surgical services, laboratory services, some home healthcare, physical and occupational therapy, and covered durable medical equipment and supplies; a voluntary program where premiums are deducted from a person's social security checks. (Part B is also called Supplementary Medical Insurance)
  • Part C - allows persons who have Parts A & B to opt for a Medicare-approved private managed care or fee-for-service plan, for an additional fee.
  • Part D - provides prescription drug coverage for an additional fee (75% subsidized)
