This guide is an introduction to the Canadian Emergencies Act, which on 14 February 2022 was invoked for the first time in its history. The Emergencies Act was invoked in response to peaceful truck driver protests in the Canadian capital Ottawa and at a few other locations around the country. The Emergencies Act is being used to criminalize behavior ex post facto, which is possibly in violation of paragraph 11(g) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This guide will be updated as the Canadian Parliament debates the use of the Emergencies Act.
