Legal Research Materials and Sources: Standards of Review and Court Rules

Introduction

A standard of review is the amount of deference given by an appellate court in reviewing a decision of a lower court.  Appellate courts have different standards of review depending on the type of legal issue they are reviewing in an appeal.

Each court has its own court rules on how briefs must be submitted, timeliness and deadlines for certain pleadings and other litigation-related deadlines, and grounds for appeal.
